A Norwegian Knitmaker Who Refuses to Retire His Yarn.

Twelve years after we first reviewed him, the family-run mill at Langevaag is still hand-finishing the same Fisherman's Sweater on the same Norwegian machines. We sent eight testers into a Hebridean winter to find out why nothing else has caught up.

From the Long Read · Chapter One

"The sweater is older than most of the people who knit it."

On the morning we drove up to Langevaag, the Atlantic was the colour of pewter and the yard outside the mill was still frozen from the night before. Inside, three women in their seventies were running the same hand-framing machines their mothers had run, on a pattern that has not changed in any meaningful way since 1853. The wool comes from twelve farms inland, the dye from a single kettle, and the only concession to the modern world is an electric light bulb over the finishing bench. Everything else, including the pace, is original.

We bought four sweaters that morning — one for each of our long-term testers in the Hebrides — and sent them home with a single instruction: wear it, wash it, lose it behind a car seat if you must, and write to us in February. Of the four that came back, three looked better than they did the day we bought them.
